Emily should have been the sole protagonist of Dishonored 2. Posted: 24 Oct 2021 10:11 PM PDT This might be an unpopular opinion, but I believe that Emily should have been the only option in Dishonored 2. Keep in mind, this is just my opinion, but I really do think the game loses some focus because it has to split the narrative between two potential protagonists. To explain my point, I'll start with why Corvo shouldn't have been the protagonist and then go into why Emily should have been the only protagonist. Corvo in the first game had a pretty simple motivation, get Emily back and deal with the men who killed the love of his life. That need to protect his last living family is what sustained him through the tortures of the prison and drove him to work with the loyalists to restore Emily to the throne. It's that motivation that drives him towards chaos or away from it depending on how the player directs him. Canonically, the Low Chaos ending happens and Corvo manages to not only save Emily but reach some level of peace with Doud. His "arc" so to speak is one of practicing restraint and bringing justice to the men who spawned the crisis; all so Emily doesn't have to inherit a world of darkness and hate. The whole game Corvo wasn't fighting for the throne, or Dunwall, or even for himself but for Emily's soul. You see it in how either of the endings play out, with Emily going full despot in the High Chaos ending. Corvo's story is about fighting against the worst people in Dunwall, and coming out the other side without blood on his hands. By the end of the game, Corvo's story is over and by his hand, fifteen years of "peace" (more on this in the Emily section) happened as Emily grew into an adult with her own wants and needs. He's a myth, the legendary masked avenger who saved Dunwall when all hope was lost, so naturally the first target Delilah would know to nullify considering her knowledge of the Outsider's mark. As possibly the only counter to Delilah, he makes the most sense to be sidelined, both to take him off the board and to kick Emily's arc off. So, that's why Corvo shouldn't be a protag of Dishonored 2, but you're probably asking why Emily should? Well, we can start with what's already in the game. Throughout Dishonored 2 Emily is confronted with not only the sins of her family's past, but the realities of life for the underclass in the Empire all the while holding onto the literal last remnant of her mother. After fifteen years of a somewhat detached rule, she's forced to deal with the fact that she's made mistakes and ignored parts of her kingdom; allowing for dark forces to take advantage. The narrative isn't as focused as it should be, but at the core, there is a really strong story of a young woman shedding the shadow of her mother and learning from the mistakes of her forbears so she can become a ruler that can take the Empire into a brighter future. An arc that culminates in Emily sacrificing her last connection to her mother, the heart, so she can put an end to Delilah's plans, forever separating Emily from her Mother's shade both literally and metaphorically. Also, it's a great point in sacrificing her mother's shade to finally make up for the lie that ruined her half-sister's life. This fundamentally is the core of Dishonored 2, and by cutting Corvo as a playable character it would give more time/resources to fleshing out Emily's story and making her a much stronger character with a very potent arc. As is, Corvo's half of the story is just him doing Dishonored 1 again, saving Emily from the big bad and going back to being the protector at the end whereas Emily actually grows and changes by experiencing the trials of the story. While we're talking about the differences between the two plot-wise, let's talk about mechanics. Corvo's powers are awesome, one of the best tool kits in gaming, but here's the thing this is a different game. Emily's base set is familiar yet unique enough that it really changes how you play the game, offering new challenges and methods that Corvo couldn't do in the first game. Emily is different from her father, that's why her abilities are focused on shadows, manipulation, and with Domino multi-target effects. The fact that you can buy the abilities of the other kind of makes the "choice" moot anyway, and I firmly believe if the only power that they shared was Dark Vision it would have made for a much more unique experience. Thematically it would drive home that while Emily is Corvo's daughter, she is her own person just as she's not the same kind of Empress Jesamine was. Question about Daud's decision Posted: 24 Oct 2021 05:26 PM PDT At the beginning of Dishonored 1, Daud assassinated the Empress and kidnapped Emily. But why didn't he also kill Corvo too? Of course this would be a lot of problem for Daud later on, but even before that I don't see any reason why Corvo was not killed in the first place. Daud certainly didn't have a problem with killing anyone who got in the way. We saw him let one of his whalers kill a guard who wasn't even directly on the way to the Empress. When the whalers got to Corvo first they also tried to kill him. Then, one of the whalers used void magic to hold Corvo mid air, surely he could easily have been killed at that point? Killing Corvo would also get rid of an eyewitness. Not that Daud would care since he's already wanted and has a bounty on his head before then. But at least it gives less reason for the authorities to prioritize hunting down Daud and The Whalers. This allowed Hiram Burrows to frame Corvo for the assassination and kidnapping, but that wasn't part of the original plan. In Burrow's vault, Daud sent a letter saying that the contract was just for Jessamine and Emily. Corvo was unexpectedly there so the payment for the job went up. Maybe I'm reading too much into this. Maybe at the time things just sort of happen and The Whalers just improvised without much thought. Still I'd like to hear what others think. Personally, this led me to come up with a headcanon: Daud and his Whalers had a policy to avoid killing unless necessary to complete a contract. Especially avoiding to kill people who are of high station in society. This is because anyone they kill now could've been a high paying assassination contract target in the future. Can't believe I didn't play this until now Posted: 24 Oct 2021 07:15 PM PDT I'm gonna admit I haven't played the first game, but goddamn is DH2 an epic game. And I've only played about an hour. How come there wasn't more hype around this game when it released? It seemed average to me and it felt like it was too cartoony for my taste. But damn is it gritty and bad ass. And damn is it beautiful, like, in terms of graphics. It looks better than Deathloop from what I've seen and that makes no sense since it's the same engine. (playing max settings on PC) I hope so badly they make a DH3. I'm a new fan of DH and will fangirl when they reveal DH3 whenever that will be. [link] [comments] | ||
