Dishonored I tried out that AI art generator that everyone's using with the prompt "Dishonored." It looks like a painting you could find in game!

Somehow I stole more coins than the level could give me

I wish someone had warned me about that song.

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 10:17 AM PDT

I don't know why Drunken Whaler seems to be the most popular song in all of Dunwall, but it's driving me batty!

Nearly every waking hour, when I'm not playing the game, the song invades my consciousness.

Thankfully, I seem to be nearing the end of the first game. I'm really hoping there aren't any whistling guards in the sequel.

So I spent over 2 hours on the Overseer Campbell mission........

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 07:40 AM PDT

I keep hearing people talk about how short this game is, but to me it seems like it'll be on par with other modern Immersive Sims.

I spent over two hours on the first "proper' mission alone. Do the other areas get smaller or something? I felt like the Brothel area was a fair bit smaller already.

I enjoyed searching through every area, I definitely wanted to get a feel for everything about the level. I did quick load quite a few scenarios while I tried different tactics and approaches. I'm aiming for a no kill run and "Try" to not get detected but some of the encounters were a bit fiddly and I couldn't be bothered with getting that perfect ghost achievement. I think so far I've only had a few bodies seen and have never had an alarm raised. I'm also getting all the non-lethal options for the targets.

To me the levels so far felt decently meaty. I can see how running through full combat can go by quick, but that's just most Immersive Sims/Stealth games. If you take your time and explore the environment, read all the books, and try to remain undetected, the game feels satisfyingly long and packed with content.

I beat Dishonored for the first time ever.

This game was really cool. It was unlike any game I've played before. I was pretty bad at it but I still had fun and that's what matters. I played on high chaos killing anyone and everything I could despite that sometimes making it harder on myself. The thing I loved most about this game is the traversal. Moving around, especially with Blinking was so fun to do. I was terrible at stealth which I always am in all games because in video games I'm as stealthy as a giraffe in a herd of zebras. I also wasn't expecting this game to be so creepy but the environment was kinda spooky at times. All in all, it was a very immersive experience and the game holds up well. I didn't think the "bad" ending was as bad as it was hyped up to be.

is crack in the slab still fun on a second playthrough?

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 08:58 AM PDT

So I've started replaying Dishonored 2 after about 2 years away from the game. So far it's a blast, but as I get closer to the dust district, I'm starting to wonder if crack in the slabs time jump mechanic will still feel as good as it did the first time. Cause while I did enjoy the time jumping quite a bit, I did often find it rather frustrating at times, so I have a feeling it might be that way again, unless someone has a suggestion on how to play the level in a more satisfying way

What natural purpose do you think the red glow of Bloodflies might serve?

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 11:06 AM PDT

Figured it might be fun to speculate! I know it's just a game, and I don't have a problem with a simple "it's a video game and this type of enemy needs a way to signal danger to the player," but it'd be cool to figure out a reasonable in-universe hypothesis together.

I've thought of a few possibilities, but I'm no armchair Natural Philosopher, so I don't know how many of these are realistic by real world standards, much less fictional world standards.

    • It could be useless, either simply having arisen randomly or for a long-lost reason and remained because it wasn't disadvantageous enough for natural selection to do its things.

    • It could be their way of communicating with each other, as with many bioluminescent creepy-crawlies. This could be for purposes of initiating reproduction, alerting others to threats, or communicating attacks. Mating is unlikely on its own given the glow's tendency to crop up in the presence of the player and other apparent hostiles, but would make sense as a "hey, we're gonna lay eggs in this person once they're dead" in tandem with the general attack warning, since it also occurs around corpses they're "making use of." The main issue with this is that they're adept at noticing sound and physical proximity, and likely wouldn't need a glow. Indeed, Nest Keepers are incapable of glowing, instead agitating them with their screams, so if shared communication is the purpose, it doesn't seem that useful compared to the other ways they're able to carry it out.

    • It could be a warning to predators, like many brightly colored insects. "Hey, I'm dangerous! Look at my fashion sense!" I don't see this as likely given they don't have known absolute predators that they are incapable of defeating and using for their own benefit.

    • That brings me to the next possibility, which is that it's to attract prey. This is another common purpose for it in the real world. I think I find this most likely based on my limited understanding, since even apparent predators can easily become prey. I don't think the purpose of blood amber is explained, so it could be an extension of this, attracting foolish creatures to their nests to gamble their nest for a new body to infest. It certainly works on humans, given the self-destructive fascination with blood amber for jewelry and the like.

    • They seem somewhat linked to the Outsider's magic, such as in the Witches' connection to them. It could genuinely just be a sign of his influence, like how his Mark glows when the bearer uses magic, which certainly doesn't seem to have a tangible benefit in combat and the like. This is pretty tenuous, since rats are even more well-established as part of his regular entourage, and well...I haven't SEEN any glowing rats yet. Still, sillier and more arbitrary Outsider publicity stunts have happened.

Any of these seem particularly likely to y'all? Got any additional arguments for or against any of them, or completely different hypotheses? I'd love to hear 'em if you do!

    Edit: Phrasing

Arkane Level Designer Dana Nightingales Hints At Unfound Easter Egg in DotO

    Posted: 06 Oct 2021 10:32 PM PDT

Dana Nightingale* (can't edit titles, sorry Dana)

    https://twitter.com/DanaENight/status/1445729679990607872

Crank the brightness way up and look in out of bounds corners of the maps. 📷 It's something you can see but not reach. But it won't mean anything if you don't know the reference. (I just did a web search for it and no results!)

She also mentions that it is a video game reference. Anyone up to search for it?

I made a new subreddit about dishonored speedruns!

    Posted: 06 Oct 2021 08:46 PM PDT

So i know that speedrun.com exist

but most of the people there tend to lean more towards speedrunning the entire game glitchless and there are less fun challenges or speedrun category to play through so since i go too lazy looking at random stuff on the internet

I decided to make a subreddit on dishonored all about speedrunning and fun challenges suggestion

    the subreddit is https://www.reddit.com/r/dishonoredchallenges/

the reason i made this subreddit is because the speedrun.com speedruns on dishonored trilogy is pretty much just boring and there is no challenge speedruns so with this subreddit you can create your own challenges and share it to other people to try your own custom challenge

you can also show off and speedrun the trilogy if you want to and also since this subreddit is pretty empty right now you can advertise yourself playing dishonored
