The narrative significance of Sokolov's security technology. Posted: 23 Jun 2020 02:08 PM PDT I just wanted to compliment another way that Dishonored explores a theme with it's gameplay: the Sokolov security technology. Disintegration is a uniquely terrifying sci-fi concept. It's ruthless, absolutely lethal, and it deletes any trace of the person that is targeted by it. It puts the "dystopia" into the steampunk dystopian world of Dishonored. It is a emblematic of the ruthless authoritarian regime and the "ends justify the means" outlook of the Lord Regent. It is on one hand pragmatic. Leaving no bodies behind means that less plague will spread. But we are of course shown the hypocrisy of Burrows. He is the man responsible for the plague in the first place! And the plague had the same purpose as the walls of light: controlling the poor and working class of dunwall from rising up against their masters. The walls of light serve also as a critique of expansive industrialization. Sokolov largely doesn't care about the suffering his inventions cause, nor does he really care about the plague victims even as he devotes himself to curing the plague. It's all a climb to him, a neverending spiral of industrial progress that sacrifices the natural magical properties of whales, which will drive them to extinction. But the way this concept is shown to the player is trough the gameplay mechanics. The walls of light and the arc pylons are extremely fickle, guards are regularly destroyed by them in accident and they are ridiculously easy to rewire. And this is not just there for us to have creative kills, it's to show what just what a terrifyingly terrible idea those weapons if destruction are. The quote from the heart goes: "At the academy they cut the flesh of the dead, and trap lightening from the sky" and what a line it is. You can't capture lightening. You can't control this immense power and use it because it will inevitably blow up right in your face. [link] [comments] | ||

Posted: 23 Jun 2020 11:09 AM PDT The Dishonored games are all pretty easy, with blink you basically have unlimited movement and access to positioning so you can easily traverse all obstacles without fighting at all, and even if you do fight, you have such advanced gear/magical powers that you are always in a position of power over your opponents. (In the first game you could realistically beat everyone by just blocking with your sword) This got me thinking about how horryfing being a target in these games really is. For example, imagine being Kirin Jindosh. You live in a fortified maze house, with extremely powerful mechanical soldiers, turrets that turn people to ash, and about 30 something guards. Someone enters your murder house and you smugly approach your visitor, and speak to her behind unbreakable glass. As you retreat to your chambers you feel something cold on your throat, then blood gushes out. As you die you see the Empress behind glass, looking down on you. Emily can literally do this in the first five minutes by using domino combined with her decoy. It's funny, because even the lord regent, the most paranoid person in the world, while in his highly protedted chambers, is taken care of easily by just using bend time (should've played that music box louder). No one is prepared for you (even the magically attuned characters who really should know better) It's kinda scary. It really makes me wanna see a replay mode for dishonored where you can see yourself from the perspective of the guards. [link] [comments] | ||

So, when I started Dishonored two a few weeks back, I went stealthy at the Hard level. Great game, terrific challenge, loved all the options, but I still got caught a lot and got killed quite a few times. Mind you, I was only using Blink (and then dark vision right at the end). Now I'm playing as Emily and I'm acknowledging that the people behind the coup are absolute bastards. How do you not kill that asshole who stabbed your guard friend? Lock him up? How 'bout feeding him to the bugs instead? I tried to go stealthy where I could, but once I was spotted, I blasted away at those cretinous guards and have killed quite a few handily. They run, I chase them and dispatch them. Most satisfying ... especially after what they did to Doyle. So I'm a killer this time. The question is, should I accept the powers from Mr. Spookypants? As Corvo, I loved Blink, but it did make things much easier. Have any of you played Emily without powers? If so, please describe your experience and I'd appreciate some tips! [link] [comments] | ||
Posted: 23 Jun 2020 10:23 AM PDT I was playing through the original the other day and I was thinking just how great of a game it is. To me, what makes a game really special is variety in gameplay. I'm not just talking about having the option to complete a mission with stealth or guns blazing, while those options are nice I think it's truly wonderful when the developers give you a bunch of tools to play around with and a sandbox environment where they let you go free and play to your heart's content. Not only does Dishonored give you options on how to tackle your objective, but you can also pretty much complete levels in fashion you want. You can go through the level in a straight line, or you can zig-zag through the environment and find multiple pathways to get from point a to point b. It's fantastic, each level is like a jungle gym and makes me feel like a kid on a playground with supernatural abilities. The way how you can experiment with the game's physics and mix it up with your powers, the combinations here are endless and it just boggles my mind when games like dishonored don't receive perfect scores from critics. Sure, the story is nothing special but that means nothing to me when the gameplay is so fantastic. [link] [comments] | ||

Cool kill animations in ghost mode Posted: 23 Jun 2020 02:50 PM PDT I recall that in Dishonored 1, if you happened to blink right in front of the unsuspecting enemy, the attack resulted in a special kill animation on main targets - even if you were not in fight mode. Because I have no options to check it right now, does that apply in the later games? I agree that sometimes it might look ridiculous, but that's just how it worked... [link] [comments] | ||
Dishonored 2 Clockwork mansion question Posted: 22 Jun 2020 11:15 PM PDT Does anyone know if extra guards spawn when you try to rescue Sokolov in the assessment chambers? (And if they do, at what point?) I was hoarding whale oil in the elevator in case I needed it against clockwork soldiers, but as soon as I try to leave the assessment chamber maze (even if I don't try to speak to Sokolov), I hear a loud crash. When I go to the elevator to investigate, I find pieces of guards all over the place. (Even if I don't press down on the buttons all the way, just enough to get past the moving walls, the elevator still explodes) Do they die because they spawn in the elevator? [link] [comments] | ||

I usually like to play stealthy but I will kill guards if I get spotted or if there isn't another option. What powers would you guys recommend? I think I've got over 80 runes. Also, I don't think I've played through D2 high chaos before. How different is it from a low chaos run? Lastly, I've never played Corvo because I always here the story is odd if you play as him. Are there any merits to a Corvo play through or am I better off sticking with Emily? [link] [comments] | ||
Dishonored 2 - Windows Key not working? (tech help pls) Posted: 23 Jun 2020 09:04 AM PDT Okay so simply put, I run Dishonored 2 and while on the menu or ingame (but not during the intro videos eg. Arkane Studios branding) my Windows Key will no longer minimize the game, switch focus or open start menu and neither will Ctrl + Esc, but all keys count toward the 'press any key' prompt on the menu and will still function properly if I open the steam overlay up. I have also tested Alt + Tab and it works fine when other things are open, but when nothing else is open it just tries to switch back to itself and goes black screen for half a second to transition to itself, which isn't usually what happens with other games.. Very confused why this is, hope someone can help me out, doesn't make the game unplayable, but would prefer to have less issues. [link] [comments] | ||
Posted: 23 Jun 2020 05:58 AM PDT They behave as any other rewired devices, attacking your enemies (not counting as spotted, but counting as kill), but they explode after an idle time. Surprisingly, they do not explode when in a fight, be it endless one (I posted here a video where you separate the soldiers with walls, and they are pointlessly shooting lightning at each other). Why were they designed like this? Do the game makers want to prevent you from accidental kills, in case you forgot your soldier somewhere? The "lore" reason I can think of is in Death of the Outsider - Jindosh needed to be able to turn soldiers on his side, regardless who they were sold, and could not make that with rewired ones, so they simply destroy themselves. How much does killing affect dishonored 2? Posted: 22 Jun 2020 08:43 PM PDT In games where you get punished for killing people I always find myself playing it in the least enjoyable way since I like being the good guy. I'm on chapter 4 and I've only killed one person so far which is when I accidentally looked the wrong way and dropped them off a building. So can I kill people who the heart says are bad without making everybody hate me? Or should I stick to choking people and giving them permanent brain damage? [link] [comments] |
